Wellington Nature Tours: Seal Colony & Farm Tour

Come and explore why they call it 'Windy Wellington' as we travel through Wellingtons biggest Wind Farm, also a working sheep & cattle farm, and down to the rugged South Coast for a visit to a real wild New Zealand Fur Seal Colony

After being completely closed for 5 years while constructing New Zealand’s Largest Wind Farm, we have been granted EXCLUSIVE access to Terawhiti Station.

Some of the highlights of the tour include:

New Zealand Fur Seals

- We stop for refreshments at a real wild Seal Colony! Get up close (but not too close!) and personal with a real native New Zealand Fur Seal. Seals guaranteed year round, but numbers fluctuate seasonably.

Wind Turbines

- We travel through New Zealand’s largest Wind Farm. Get right up to the towering 111m turbines, harnessing the wind to generate clean, renewable electricity.

Terawhiti Farm

- Terawhiti Farm is one of New Zealand’s largest farms and has been in the same family since 1850. Learn about the fascinating history of the area and its connections to Wellington.

Farm animals

- Thanks to the roads installed for the Wind Farm, this is now a working farm again. We show you how the farm is being diversified to get the most out of the area without damaging the natural environment.

Goats

- There are over 3000 wild goats on the property. We are sure to see theses lovely creatures bounding over rocks and running up mountains like, well mountain goats!

Leaning lighthouse

- A Wellington landmark, usually only seen from the Cook Strait Ferry. One of Wellingtons oldest and most remote Lighthouses.

This fabulous new tour is the best way to get out and see the real New Zealand.

Day 1 : Seal Colony & Farm tour
The Wild Wellington Nature Tour is a Half Day tour of Wellington’s extraordinary natural flora and fauna including a visit to Tongue Point Seal colony. The wild forces of nature all collide within Wellington’s dramatic landscape. It is home to mythical beasts, is the source of wondrous legends, and has been ravaged by earthquakes and cyclones. Before we get to the seals, the tour departs from central Wellington and we travel past some of the city’s most famous icons on our way to the suburb of Karori and soon leave the city limits and drive through a real slice of rural New Zealand. Enjoy an exhilarating journey through Terawhiti Station to the dramatic Seal Coast south of the city. Home of New Zealand’s most modern wind farm, Terawhiti Station is also a working beef and sheep farm. As we drive through the farm we discuss the history of farming and electricity generation in the area. We will drive you across a live active fault line, over rocky beachfront and around headlands to visit a colony of Wild New Zealand Fur seals. The views on this tour are exceptional – weather permitting, you’ll see the Tasman Sea meet the Pacific Ocean, the tumultuous waters of Cook Strait separating the North and South Islands, and the distant mountain ranges of the South Island. Fur Seals are at the colony all year round, but peak Seal numbers are May ~ August. The farm is a working farm, so the animals we see will depend on time of year.
