At Moonlight Stables our friendly guides and well mannered horses will take you on an adventure amongst deer & sheep in an idylic setting with amazing scenery, from the hills above beautiful Lake Hayes, to the banks of the crystal clear Kawarau river, horse trekking at it's best.
At Moonlight Stables our aim is to make the customers experience as personal as possible. We ride in small groups where they do not have to follow in a line, our guides will encourage the riders to spread out, walk side by side with friends or family, and takes pictures of the beautiful scenery.
We cater to all riding abilities from complete beginners, families with children to experienced riders. Everyone can choose their own pace, and have the opportunity to learn and improve their horse riding skills, or just enjoy the ride, and learn about the farm and local area.
Doonholme farm is an 800 acre working deer and sheep farm, situated in the midst of the beautiful Wakatipu Basin, along the way you will see historic buildings, interesting landmarks, farm animals and local wildlife in their natural habitat.
The ride makes its way onto the farm via the historic woolshed and original farmhouse before proceeding over rolling farmland, with breathtaking views of the Kawarau River, Remarkables Mountains and Queenstown.
The guest will be able to get up close and personal with our impressive heard of Wapiti deer and the very rare white fallow deer that are famous for their moose like antlers. The Wapiti are pretty special and the size of the stags will surprise those who have not had the chance to see these magnificent animals in close proximity.
During the ride there is ample opportunity to pick up the pace and enjoy a trot, or if you’re an experienced rider, you can head off at your desired pace and meet up with the rest of the group at the lookout points.
Bring your camera to get some stunning pictures of you and your horse, the impressive deer and the breathtaking surroundings.
On arrival at Moonlight Stables, guests meet the friendly guides and are fitted out with their riding kit, including a safety helmet and driza-bone jacket if needed. The guides will then match you up with a suitable horse, which is carefully chosen in relation to guest riding ability and size, and give you a comprehensive briefing on how to control, steer and ride your horse. Guest will then get a chance to practice controlling their horse before heading out onto Doonholme farm for the 1 ½ hour ride.
