Almost Big One | 20 Night Canadian Road Trip Adventure

Experience just about it all. You'll join our grand road trip adventure in Quebec City combining many of our favourite places, each unique and awesome. The great outdoors, national parks, epic cities and quaint towns. You'll trek across Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI.

Day 1 : Quebec City (1 nights)
** If you join us on the ALMOST BIG ONE trip, you will meet us in Quebec City the day before we depart for Tadoussac. Some, not all of this will be available for you: You can explore the narrow, cobbled streets of the old fortified city. You can check out the Citadel, the Plains of Abraham and many more historical sites, and enjoy exploring to/from Quebec city with us at the majestic Montmorency Falls, Canyon Sainte-Anne. For eats, you'll discover amazing poutine alongside other Quebec specialities, after which you can head out to an arcade game-styled bar or boîte de chanson for some local live music. Sleep: HI-Quebec Auberge Internationale de Québec or Auberge de la Paix Quebec Activities: Via Ferrata and climb up close to the massive Canyon Sainte-Anne Explore huge waterfalls including Montmorency Falls Eat a generous portion of poutine and be entertained at a boîte de chanson

Day 2 : Tadoussac Quebec (2 nights)
From Quebec City we'll head north along the St Lawrence river, making a few stops along the way, including Charlevoix so that you can try their famous and ridiculously delicious cheese. We'll then take short ferry, and arrive at our destination, Tadoussac, where we will stay for a few days. ​ You'll have a chance to explore huge sand dunes, go whale-watching by boat or kayak, and enjoy strolls along the quaint village streets. The local auberge jeunesse is a Quebec hippie style hostel, offering live music and bonfires throughout the evening and until very late. Sleep: Auberge Jeunesse Tadoussac Activities: Whale watching Hike the sand banks and dunes Explore the town and visit the interpretive centre, or hike in Mont Adela-Lessard

Day 3 : Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick (3 nights)
We'll then enter the Maritimes! Here you'll witness the Bay of Fundy, which has the highest tides in the world. You can explore the national park, go wildlife viewing, and stargaze into a sky free of light pollution. Meanwhile you'll eat your fill of seafood fresh out of the water. You’ll also get to experience Hopewell Rocks, Cape Enrage, Sea Coves, the official Scenic Trail Drive and more. We have a few great days for exploration. Sleep: Two of - Cabins in Fundy National Park, Not Your Average Hostel and UNB Fredericton (ferry/season dependent). Activities: Explore Hopewell Rocks, Cape Enrage, Fundy Trail, Coastal Hikes and Rocky Beaches Stargaze in the dark sky preserve and hike Fundy National Park Delicious fresh seafood opportunities

Day 4 : Halifax, Nova Scotia (3 nights)
We'll then drive further east across New Brunswick and head south towards our destination, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Halifax itself is fantastic, with colourful gingerbread-style houses, seaside lighthouses and picturesque rocky shorelines. You'll experience clean breezes, beautiful views and people that love nothing more than signing a tune and enjoying a drink. Additional excursions to Peggy’s Cove and a few other spots and beyond are also on the docket. Sleep: HI Halifax Hostel Explore Peggy’s Cove and further along the South Shore. On some trips we will explore further to Mahone Bay and Lunenburg Enjoy power hour or a murder mug at the Split Crow, or listen to tunes at the Triangle till the wee hours

Day 5 : Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island ova Scotia (3 nights)
From Halifax we'll venture north to the scenic Cabot Trail and Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Coastal views from Cheticamp, Pleasant Bay and beyond are breathtaking. There is so much to do and see here - mostly outside whether a swim in the ocean or a nice hike with an incredible view. We will definitely be out and exploring. Along the way, we'll stop in quaint Acadian villages and seaside towns. The national park is filled with incredible hiking opportunities. Some of the ones we love include Franey, Middlehad and Skyline trails. Sleep: Pleasant Bay Cabot Trail Hostel Activities: Hike the Skyline trail to see wildlife and witness a magical sunset Drive and hike in Cape Breton National Park Swim in secret swimming holes

Day 6 : Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (3 nights)
Gorgeous, charming and relaxed, Prince Edward Island (PEI) is the next stop on our big road trip. Charlottetown has a beautiful waterfront and some fine local pubs, where you'll have an opportunity to try their local specialty – blueberry beer or some local oysters. PEI is the home of the potato, and some hostels will provide you with some for free. If the timing is right, you'll be able to pick up “new” potatoes at a local stand and chow down. There are also some great provincial parks and beaches to visit on optional day trips. In fact, it has Canada's best beaches. Sleep: Charlottetown Backpackers Inn Sand dune hiking at Greenwich, swimming at the singing sands in Basin Head, as well as North Cape and East Cape beaches Eat the best and freshest oysters in Malpeque Stuff your face with potatoes and seafood in PEI

Day 7 : Gaspesie, Saint Anne des Monts & Riviere du Loup (3 nights)
Unless you're from Quebec, Gaspesie is a little-known treasure, not least for its spectacular Gaspesie national park. The drive we'll take along the St Lawrence and through the national parks is truly epic, with hidden coves and quaint towns dotted throughout. You'll experience beautiful nature, wonderful hiking opportunities and delicious local cuisine. The Sea Shack is renowned for cool rooms, cabins, yurts and a beachside tiki bar which usually has a stellar band jamming. Bonfires, star gazing and some great music and festivities, will be the usual way to round off the day. After Gaspesie, we normally pop by Riviere du Loup for an evening - so that we have time explore the incredible Parc Bic! Day 8 : Montreal, Quebec (2 nights)
Montreal may be indescribable, but we can at least promise quality food, great nightlife and good times on our arrival. You can check out Rue St Denis, the Latin Quarter and the Village. From the Basilique Notre Dame to the Basque restaurants of Old Montreal, you'll get to enjoy all that the city has to offer in its own distinct Quebecois way. You can get by with English in most spots, but knowing a few sentences in French will be appreciated! Sleep: HI Montreal, M Montreal, or SameSun Montreal Explore the Botanical Garden, Biodome, and Mount Royal Visit La Fontaine Park and the Biosphere

Day 9 : Toronto, Ontario (0 nights, drop-off)
We'll arrive back in Toronto after a decent drive from Montreal. There is a lot packed into "The Six", and it's well worth a few days in itself. So make sure you have enough energy left for an afternoon's mooching around Kensington Market or Ossington Avenue, or a bike ride around the Toronto Islands, or at least a walk along West Queen West and a lunch in Trinity Bellwoods. It really doesn't have to end here. Sleep: Do your own thing. There are tons of things to get up to. We will gladly share some tips, and you can check out our blog for updates.

If you join us on the ALMOST BIG ONE trip, you will meet the group in Quebec City the day before we depart for Tadoussac. You can arrive anytime. We will connect you with your trip leader that day so that you can meet-up with the group. If you want to join us earlier, feel free to book your own accommodations (easiest if at the same place) and join up. The Quebec City day is mostly free exploration on your arrival. 

Prepayment Options & Requirements:

  • Accommodation – passengers are required to pre-pay for accommodations before departure to Out Here Ltd. Pricing for pre-paid accommodations is $895 CAD including tax
  • Add-on activities (e.g. Rafting, Via Ferrata) can be prepaid when signing up before trip departure. For some, you will pay on arrival. They are usually between $60 and $110 dollars. In most instances there are alternatives available.
  • Local Entrance Fees: Each passenger is required to pay a stipend to cover entrance fees (to national parks and such that we visit during day trips and along the route which is $121 CAD including tax for the Almost Big One.

Not Included in Trip Pass: 

  • Most Food – we stop by grocery stores along the way. Other times folks head out on the town. Group cooking is optional, and usually led by travellers.
